Guadeloupe is situated in the Lesser Antilles of the Eastern Caribbean, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Caribbean Sea to the west. To the north of Guadeloupe is the island of Antigua, and to the south, the Commonwealth of Dominica
Guadeloupe is a French overseas department (DOM), making it a legal entity of France and the European Union. The island therefore benefits from EU policies regarding local development, specifically in the areas of tourism and agriculture.
This documentary film presents the specific geographical characteristics of the “butterfly island” of the Lesser Antilles. As a viewer, you will discover villages, beaches as well as local traditions. Throughout this travel adventure allow yourself to be seduced by the vibrant colors of the tropics and the warm personality of the people of Guadeloupe.
This film is in fact part of a larger project; it is the last step in a long endeavor which began with the work on a Master’s thesis entitled “Natural Hazards in Guadeloupe,” presented to and defended at the Faculty of Geography, Université de Strasbourg during the summer of 2005.
The year 2004 was defined by several intense meteorological phenomenons: eleven tropical depressions and seven hurricanes, six of which were severe. Accompanied by a high level of precipitation, these meteorological phenomenon caused many mudslides which destroyed houses and sections of roadway. On the 21st of November an earthquake struck Guadeloupe and particularly affected the small archipelago Les Saintes, as if to highlight the catastrophic character of the year that will for long be remembered.
This documentary is complemented by several photo galleries exhibited on the website of Association Procreaction. Discover these galleries at : Pictures of Guadeloupe.
